A very important factor which has never failed me in my own life and running a business: doing my better to change lives for the better. I understand this seems too simple, nonetheless it hasn’t failed me. When I started my first business mowing lawns, it had been my saving grace, so when I took over Pharmacyclics it became the heart of our mission.
Making a notable difference for the better differs than making a notable difference. Lot’s of people could make a notable difference but can you change lives for the better? The mission to produce a difference for the better is a game changer for me personally and my companies. Among my initial real entrepreneurial endeavors was cookies. We made great cookies, plus they really made people happy. We sold vast amounts of cookies. The issue for me was I didn’t feel just like I was making a notable difference for the better and because that part was missing, I shifted.
As I focused on this simple idea and applied it to how I selected projects, doors to my real potential and winning opportunities opened for me personally. This is when I must say i started winning. When I was running Computer Motion, which later merged with Intuitive Surgical, the target was to use robots to create surgery less invasive, create less scar damage, reduce recovery time and make surgery easier for the physician and the patient by giving more precision operations. To put it simply, I was making a notable difference for the better through the use of robotics which have perfect memories, eight arms, never tire… well, you get the idea. It was the idea of making a notable difference for the better that allowed me to start to see the opportunity. When I took over Pharmacyclics I did so a similar thing. This led to a company that was worth significantly less than $1 per share selling seven years later for $265 per share.

Making a notable difference for the better is a straightforward idea that is quite big. And it has turned into a guiding light for me personally in my own investing criteria, day-to-day operations and my own life. If it, whatever "it" is, cannot pass the "change lives for the better" litmus test, I leave it alone.
When I look back over my career, this simple idea has been the thing which has never failed me. As an adolescent, my first business was mowing lawns. My goal as an adolescent was not to help make the Forbes 400 list but to simply make enough money to get myself through college. When I was mowing lawns I realized when I went that extra mile to produce a difference for the better, the house owner wished to tip me or give me more work. It wasn’t even very hard. Sometimes it was a straightforward smile, extra care to be sure a hedge was edged perfectly, or making the effort when I was done to really have the owner walk the house with me admiring might work.
Making a notable difference for the better is my driving force today and it hasn’t let me down. Ensure you add this idea to your existing company or startup. Practice making a notable difference for the better in how you answer the telephone, handle a customer’s complaint, an investor’s question, by firmly taking enough time to remind a worker how important they are for you or by picking right up that little bit of paper on to the floor that everyone else appears to walk passed.
